Dressing the part

One guideline to effective networking is knowing how to dress for occasions.

Casual FridayWhile we may joke about what to wear when, it is extremely important as first impressions are lasting ones.

The cartoon reminds me of preparing for a job interview that takes place on a Friday.  If the company has a casual dress policy for the day, do you dress as they do?  How about if you are a supplier visiting a client or prospect?  Here’s my take on those scenarios:

If you are the job seeker, no.  Dress as if you would for any interview.  If a suit is in order, then wear a suit.  The point is you haven’t been invited into the culture yet.  the caveat to this is that you ask before you come.  When you et up your interview, ask your host what is appropriate dress for the workday.  You want to make the best impression possible.

If you are the supplier, it could be yes or no.  How well do you know your client?  If the answer is yes, then dress as they dress.  If you are trying to win over a prospect, use your judgment: coming in too familiar could win you points, but could also make them think you too overconfident.

Dress type is also a topic, probably for another entry.

Relentless
