My colleague, Sharon Larkin, pointed this out recently. She found this quote in Oprah Magazine, attributed to Shirley Ann Jackson:
“Power is (equal to) preparation plus connection plus excellence.”
Let’s examine this a little more closely:
Power: empowerment, control, exerted direction.
Preparation: in advance of an event or assignment, having done research, knowing what to expect when it happens, not going in “cold.”
Connection: what we all aspire to in networking, the “click” between potential partners and network ties.
Excellence: the best, the pinnicle, the top of your game.
We all have power we didn’t realize we had until we connect the dots of our connections (who we know) as we prepare to what we aspire to.
Translation for the relentless networker: don’t go out the door unprepared, unarmed or prepared to do your best.
Relentless
